Spend a day on the River Wye with Want to Canoe?

“Rivers know this: there is no hurry. We shall get there some day.”

– but don’t just take Poohs’ word for it, hop in one of our canoes and see for yourself.  At want to canoe?, based in Hay on Wye our opinion is that the river is what you make of it and we can help you choose a route and trip format that suits your requirements and interests, from bushcraft to camping to glamping to bird-watching to wildlife to paddle-sport to fly-fishing to family-gatherings to stag and hen parties to romantic getaways… the list is endless and the River Wye has got it all covered!

You could get very serious and plan a wild camping trip sleeping under the stars by night and canoeing the river by day.  Last summer the want to canoe? team spent a magical couple of weeks assisting the one and only Ray Mears who was in the area focusing on the River Wye whilst filming the next series of Wild Britain (being aired on the 2nd of August at 8pm on ITV1.).  What better challenge than to follow in his footsteps and if you’re feeling really tough you could go the whole hog and sleep under your canoe, if you’re Ray Mears you don’t even need a tent!

This peaceful and ever-changing setting is the ideal place to wile away a few hours, spend a day or even a week. Furthermore, what better way to get a bit of aerobic and cardiovascular exercise than canoeing the Wye? Burning calories has never been so relaxing!

The Wye is by far one of the most beautiful rivers in the British Isles and one of the few you can navigate by canoe, without restriction, for well over 100 miles. We offer you the chance to embark on a relaxing river adventure from several different points, with an array of different routes to choose from, all with their own unique sights, sounds and smells.

Along your journey, you can expect to see a number of spectacular and fascinating characters in their natural habitats, including kingfishers, herons, cormorants, swans and otters – all from the prime viewpoint of your canoe.

For those of you wanting to get the most out of your canoe-trip it’s worth considering a guided paddle with our Pro-Paddler and BCU Qualified Instructor Ollie.  Whether it’s providing safety and enjoyment for all the family, giving you the skills and knowledge to navigate down the river, safety and reassurance for nervous groups or knowledge of wildlife, local area and river hydrology, guided canoe trips with Ollie will give you that little bit extra! Ollie will be with us here in Hay-on-Wye every Friday throughout the summer and by appointment on any other day subject to availability.  Ray Mears thinks Ollie is AWESOME. Enough said.
