Brecon Shopping Guide This Christmas.
Brecon is the ideal place to search for Christmas gifts and unusual items for decorating your home. In the twisty alleys and main streets with old stone buildings are many independent traders, lighting their windows and opening their doors for Christmas shoppers. The town also has a number of lovely coffee shops and places to relax or get out of the December weather for a hot chocolate or warming soup.
A special seasonal attraction is the Brecon Christmas Village, situated in and around the George Hotel open 10.00 – 5.00 daily until Christmas Eve. In Mr Dickens House is a collection of gifts for sale, including paintings and crafts by local artists, clothing, toys, jewellery, unusual items for the home and garden, Christmas decorations and books.
Best for toys
Cariad is a perfect toyshop, a child’s dream: brightly coloured, robust wooden toys that will tolerate any amount of rumbustuous play and be much loved for many years. Cariad is located at 6, The Bulwark, Brecon. There is, in addition to the toyshop, a little shop selling children’s shoes just down the hill on the Watton.
Cariad is on Facebook; check out their page for special offers and new products; alternatively, phone on 01874 624303.
For the Home
Next is Kindle House, a fragrant shop on the Bulwark with a range of interesting and practical items for rural living (or, of course, living anywhere, if you wish to keep a memory of happy days tramping the hills and returning to a comforting fire, quirky kitchen items, country crafts and homely items!) Snuggly blankets, candles, ceramics, bags, clothes, even paints, all can be found in this small but fascinating shop.
For your Horse and all horse mad-people
In a wonderful shop, tucked away next to the Co-op and accessed via an historic yard off Lion Street, is “Canter-Happy”, a feast of items for anyone with an interest in horses. Practical items for care of you and your equine friend, all equipment, tack, clothing, safety equipment; also a range of presents such as horsey socks, cards, and so on. There are buckets and wheelbarrows, saddles, hats, equine supplements too.
A shop which may be a little unexpected in a small market town like Brecon is “La Lingerie”, selling a large range of underwear, including the practical (sports bras and maternity bras) and the frivolous or slinky, whatever your requirements La Lingerie will certainly be able to help. Also to be found here is swimwear and nightwear. Definitely this is a place to call at before all the Christmas parties begin this year! In stock at the moment is underwear in seasonal colours, but La Lingerie is always a treasure house for attractive “underpinnings”. Advice and fitting provided, and no appointment necessary. This is an attractive little shop, small on the outside but spacious inside and crammed with goodies for all ladies.
La Lingerie is located to the rear of No 1 High Street, Brecon in a lovely old stone building – at one time the town’s printers! Contact firstname.lastname@example.org or on www.lalingeriebrecon.co.uk or phone 01874 610033, or 07734 394080.
For Pets, Children, and anyone who likes unusual Christmas decorations or gifts
Continuing up Lion Street, we find perhaps the most unusual shop in Brecon and definitely worth a look – Elf Bazaar! All Christmassy goodies are here, decorations, cards, gifts; and not only for humans, as there is the happiest and brightest range of pet toys, beds, leads, bowls, houses, food – anything in fact for your “companion animal”. Elf Bazaar will delight anyone, especially children, and is a must for browsers. When you think you have seen everything, another odd little item comes to your notice, and everything is guaranteed to make you smile.
A warm welcome at Elf Bazaar, 7 Lion Street, Brecon, or www.elfbazaar.co.uk
Best for Crafters
An ancient wooden-framed building on Ship Street is the home to Emeralds, a shop full of everything for people devoted to craft or wishing to learn a new crafting skill. Stencils, kits, paints, felt, beads, modelling clay and so much more. Debbie will assist if you are not sure what you need, and there is plenty for a special gift for the craft person in the family.
Contact Emeralds, The Art of Craft, by calling at the shop at 20, Ship Street, opposite the library, or phone 01874 623455.
For Books, Coffee, Cakes, and Food
The Hours coffee and book shop is also on Ship Street, halfway down the hill. Behind the wonky green door is a delightful shop, full of hand-picked books for adults and children, Christmas gift book-boxes, the best coffee in town, cakes, home-made soup, sandwiches, and breakfasts (watch your meal being prepared in the teeny kitchen at the back). The meeting place for local artists, writers, and anyone wanting a place to browse, read the paper, chat and relax. The “upstairs” has ancient uneven floorboards and beams, but is the place to enjoy exhibitions of work by local artists or just to sit and read in a quiet atmosphere.
The Hours, open Tues – Sat 10.00 – 17.00 (Closed Sun and Mon), 01874 622800, 15 Ship Street, Brecon LD3 9AD and email@example.com
