Day Fourteen of the Brecon Beacons Advent Calendar

Day Fourteen of the Brecon Beacons Advent Calendar celebrates a walking Wednesday with a Christmas theme…..

Here are five shortish festive walks to get rid of a mince pie or two, by Emma of Brecon Beacons Holiday Cottages.  The Crickhowell Walking Festival also goes along some of these routes.

1. The canal towpath & Fairy Glen at Llangynidr.  Park at the Coach & Horses & walk along the canal towpath up to the locks, then go over the little footbridge & up the little valley known as Fairy Glen – at the top you can either go over the stile & through the farmyard & down the road or just return back the way you came. I did this on New Years Day last year & then just popped into the Coach & Horses for a nice glass of Mulled wine…

2.   This is a nice afternoon walk that goes up to the Trig Point on Mynndd Illtyd – it’s a fair walk up from the Mountain Centre but nice to see the lights in of the houses & cars in the Valleys below – be sure to leave enough time to get back safely before dark – & wear boots as it can be muddy good fun !

3.    A  late afternoon browse around Crickhowell or Hay on Wye – both these pretty market towns have festive shop windows with Christmas Trees & lights – be sure to pop into Number Eighteen for a warming coffee or the Kilverts in Hay for a pint of Christmassy Real Ale.

4    Enjoy a stroll around the wonderful parkland at the National Trusts Dinefwr Park & Castle in Llandeilo – or alternatively do one of the educational walks  – ‘Hidden History’ or ‘Deer Park’, take the children to the play park to let off steam & then enjoy a bowl of Welsh Cawl in the Tearooms – I’m sure the house will be tastefully decorated for Christmas.

5.   Have an evening stroll around Brecon enjoying the Christmas Lights & then finish up at the Cathedral for the Rotary Christmas Concert (Monday 19th December – 7.30pm)
